Competent Person

Any person designated by the occupier or employer to be responsible for the initial or periodic inspection including testing of the electro-sensitive protective equipment (ESPE) and the machine to which it is applied.

For power presses there are specific legal requirements concerning the appointment of persons to carry out such inspections and tests, in particular Part IV of the Provision and Use of Work Regulations 1998 applies.

Separation Distance

The position of the light barrier from the trapping point is determined by the stopping performance of the machine and the object detection capabilities of the light curtain.

separation distance = (1.8 * stopping time) + penetration figure

penetration figure = 3.4 (object detection -7)

    distances are in mm; time in milliseconds

Example A Cambrake IR2-600-200-M-S rejection 30mm fitted to a machine with a stopping time of 200ms

penetration figure = 3.4 (object detection -7) = 3.4 (30 -7) = 78.2ms

separation distance = (1.8 * stopping time) + penetration figure = (1.8 * 200) + 78.2 = 438.2mm

The distance from the trapping point to the innermost point of the vertical section of the light curtain must be greater then 438mm.
