Paragraph 116 (2) HSG180

"Every employer shall ensure that work equipment exposed to conditions causing deterioration which is liable to result in dangerous situations is inspected -

    (a) at suitable intervals; and

    (b) each time that exceptional circumstances which are liable to jeopardise the safety of the work equipment have occurred,

to ensure that health and safety conditions are maintained and that any deterioration can be detected and remedied in good time."

Inspecting the safety system is essential to ensure that the system is functioning correctly and safely. Tests should be carried out daily by the machine operator or tool setter or other competent person.

On a regular basis (6 to 12 months) a more thorough inspection should be carried out. We carry out a thorough examination of the safety system which involves checking all the electrical aspects of the safety system and the machine control system. We also check the stopping performance of the machine and ensure that the light barrier is placed correctly relative to the trapping point.
